Yoga essentials
What do I need to do yoga?
The good news is that you don't need anything to do yoga, apart from bringing your mind and body to the practice. If you want to get ready by preparing a bit, read the following.
1. Mats are often provided in a yoga studio, but if you love your practice, consider getting your own mat. It will become a much-cherished private space. Never step on other people's mats!
2. Wear any comfortable clothes that give you space to move. Unless you want to show off your new sporty bra or your chest hair in inverted poses, make sure tops are not too baggy. Take off any jewellery or watches that could hinder you in the practice.
3. Take your socks off. Your feet are the foundation of all your standing poses, you need to be able to feel your toes on the mat. It is safer too, as the mats are designed for a good grip for bare feet, not for socks. Special yoga socks are designed for safe use on a yoga mat, but remember the design of these socks aims to give you the same grip and feeling as bare feet......
4. Yoga can help to heal your body, but if you have any injuries, old or new, or any other health issues, always inform your teacher before the lesson, so that we can make sure you practise safely.
5. Be in the moment. Allow yourself to bring your awareness and presence to the practice. Please put your phone on silent during the lesson.
6. Last but not least, if you have made it to your yoga lesson, despite life's busyness threatening to distract you, you have done the right thing. Congratulate yourself!
